Nuevo Mundo, Ep. 07 - Colombia

Juan Tamayo | Documentary, Series

2020 | 54 minutes | Chile

In Colombia, urban art fights against historical violence, reclaims public space, and promotes a new reality of peace and unity.

Synopsis

Colombia, a country scarred by decades of historical violence, has found in graffiti and muralism powerful tools for reclaiming public space and fostering a culture of peace. In a society where the imagery of violence has been deeply embedded, street art offers a different narrative—one that resists the oppression imposed by armed groups and speaks to the longing for social and political transformation. Graffiti and murals, in their bold colors and striking imagery, have filled the void left by a fractured system of communication, allowing marginalized voices to be heard and fostering solidarity. In this episode, we explore how Colombian street art reimagines public spaces as territories for peace and unity, promoting a new collective imagination amidst the shadows of conflict. These visual expressions not only document the country's painful past but also spark dialogue about healing, resistance, and the possibility of a peaceful future.
