Nuevo Mundo, Ep. 04 - Peru
Juan Tamayo | Documentary, Series
2020 | 51 minutes | Chile
Peruvian urban art reveals internal racism, historical conflicts, and the struggle for identity in a culturally diverse city.
Synopsis
In Lima, Peru’s capital, the convergence of migrants from diverse regions of the country has created a vibrant cultural mosaic, vividly expressed on the city’s walls. This urban art reflects the struggles of those seeking to carve out their own space amidst the internal racism that permeates the nation.
Through murals and graffiti, artists expose deep-seated social issues that trace their origins back to the colonial era and persist through Peru’s history of political violence, terrorism, and internal conflict.
In this episode, we explore how these visual expressions not only document personal and collective histories but also challenge societal norms, using public spaces to highlight the resilience and creativity of those marginalized by structural inequality. From bold depictions of Andean traditions to confrontational images addressing modern struggles, Lima’s walls serve as a testament to a city that is both a meeting point and a battleground for diverse identities and stories.
