Nuevo Mundo, Ep. 03 - Chile

Juan Tamayo | Documentary, Series

2020 | 53 minutes | Chile

In Chile, urban art resurges after the dictatorship, blending memory and modernity to express resistance and redefine identities.

Synopsis

In Chile, street muralism was essential in promoting the political and social ideals of the Popular Unity movement in the 1970s. Walls became vibrant canvases of hope, unity, and revolution, reflecting the collective aspirations of a society striving for change. However, this powerful expression of resistance was abruptly silenced by the military dictatorship, which implemented a cultural whitewashing to erase these voices from public spaces.

Decades later, in a country profoundly transformed by political, social, and cultural shifts, graffiti and street art have reclaimed their place in the urban landscape. These new manifestations, infused with diverse global influences, intertwine with Chile’s historical context to create a dynamic visual dialogue.

In this episode, we explore how contemporary street artists navigate the tensions between memory and modernity, using public spaces to question, provoke, and represent identities and conflicts in 21st-century Chilean streets.
