Nuevo Mundo, Ep. 05 - Ecuador

Juan Tamayo | Documentary, Series

2020 | 52 minutes | Chile

In Ecuador, urban art challenges imposed aesthetics and gives visibility to Amazonian and Andean cultures, reclaiming identity and representation.

Synopsis

In Ecuador, a country defined by the imaginary line of the Equator that divides the world, the graffiti and street art movement takes root in a territory marked by contradictions. Here, urban artists claim their presence in public spaces, often defying the imposed aesthetic codes and official narratives that have historically marginalized certain populations.

Ecuador, with its rich and diverse cultural heritage, is home to communities that struggle with a lack of representation, and graffiti offers a platform for reclaiming visibility.

In this episode, we explore how street art in Ecuador blends elements of Amazonian and Andean cultures, weaving indigenous symbols and practices into the urban landscape. These visual expressions serve not only as a response to social and political exclusion but also as a powerful tool for reclaiming identity, challenging cultural erasure, and celebrating the vibrant diversity of Ecuador’s people and landscapes.
