A Philosopher in the Arena
(Un filósofo en la arena)
Aarón Fernández, Jesús Muñoz | Documentary
2018 | 100 minutes | Mexico, Spain
French philosopher Francis Wolff journeys through France, Spain, and Mexico, reflecting on bullfighting, life, mortality, and fading traditions.
Synopsis
After his retirement, French philosopher and bullfighting enthusiast Francis Wolff decides to embark on a journey to France, Spain, and Mexico joined by two Mexican filmmakers who hardly know anything about bullfighting, a culture whose days seem to be numbered.
Probing the philosophical dilemmas surrounding this controversial practice, Wolff explores humanity’s relationship with animals, nature, mortality, and the essence of life itself. Rooted in his work 'Philosophie de la corrida' ('Philosophy of Bullfighting'), the film offers a deep dive into the cultural and existential questions of a tradition whose days seem numbered.
Reviews
“An exercise in political incorrectness through film.” – Héctor González, Aristegui Noticias
“An intimate look at how Wolff finds deep connections between his philosophical discipline and the world of bullfighting.” – La Vanguardia
“They wanted to understand my passion for bullfighting and in turn I wanted to understand why that passion seemed to be condemned by modernity. We decided to make that double quest through a journey through three countries: France, Mexico and Spain.” – Francis Wolff, interview with Pilar Guardiola, El Imparcial
