[Non] Human Person

(Persona [No] Humana )
Alex Cuellar, Rafa G. Sánchez | Documentary

2022 | 108 minutes | Spain

Sandra and Cecilia have spent their lives in captivity without committing a crime. An NGO fights for their release. The catch: they're not human.

Synopsis

Sandra and Cecilia have spent their entire lives in captivity. But there's a twist to their story—they're not human. These two, an orangutan and a chimpanzee, reside in separate Argentinian zoos under harsh conditions. However, their plight catches the attention of a Spanish NGO dedicated to their release.

Enter the 'Great Ape Project,' an organization determined to secure the recognition of Sandra and Cecilia's fundamental rights: the right to life, liberty, and freedom from torture. In a groundbreaking move, the NGO collaborates with Argentine lawyers to embark on a legal journey seeking personhood status for these non-human individuals.

The concept of 'non-human personhood' challenges traditional notions of legal rights, proposing that certain beings possess inherent rights regardless of species. As the legal battle unfolds, questions of ethics, humanity, and the nature of personhood come to the forefront, compelling viewers to reconsider their perceptions of rights and empathy.
