Synopsis
In this deeply personal, autoethnographic documentary, exiled Cuban filmmaker Lázaro J. González weaves together his own narrative with that of his mother, Elena, to capture an unfolding humanitarian crisis in Cuba.
Set against the backdrop of a massive exodus to the United States, Parole explores the agonizing wait for family reunification through the juxtaposition of two irreconcilable worlds, connected only by WhatsApp audio messages. While Elena yearns for a better life amid the daily hardships of the impoverished Cuban countryside, marked by endless blackouts and food scarcity, González navigates the financial pressures of academic life and the San Francisco housing crisis.
Channeling the epistolary rhythm of Chantal Akerman’s News from Home, the film uses long takes and a decorrelated soundscape to accentuate the profound division caused by borders and authoritarianism. As the thorny issue of family remittances strains their communication, the film emerges as a cinematic letter-response—a lifeline meant to bridge the disjunction between global capitalism and Cuba’s socialist system.
Parole moves beyond the headlines of the U.S.-Cuba migratory crisis, offering an intimate look at the systemic hurdles, economic anxieties, and complex intersection of exile and kinship. It is a meditation on displacement, the liminality of exile, and Cuban resilience that gestures toward what some critics have identified as a “new wave” of Cuban cinema.
Reviews
"Parole is a physical film: it records the perceptions of the emigrant, his intimate encounters, in the city's profile—according to the director, these are the places he frequents, the places he usually passes through every day." — Ángel Pérez, Rialta Magazine
"González succeeds in creating an immigrant’s palimpsest: a tableau in which the anxiety of exile coexists with the strangeness of a homeland to which he no longer belongs." — Gretel Delgado, Diario de las Américas
"Although we cannot speak of a cohesive 'movement,' it is not wrong to include Petricor (Violena Ampudia, 2022), La historia se escribe de noche (Alejandro Alonso, 2024), Souvenir (Heidi Hassan, 2024) and Parole (Lázaro González, 2024) in a Cuban film 'new wave' propelled mainly from the field of independent directors and producers, now almost entirely resident in the diaspora." — Antonio Enrique González Rojas, Diario de Cuba
