Synopsis
Young Atoqcha travels from his rural village to Cusco in search of a better future, but it will be hard for him to leave his mother, his sister, and his homeland behind.
This is the story of a migration, like so many in Latin America, from the country to the city. If centuries of humiliation, both violent and subtle, have made some feel embarrassed of their language and traditions, Kinra seeks for a cinematic way to rebel against injustice. For starters, avoiding any kind of paternalism when building a complex character and conflict.
Also, giving that experience time and space on screen—travels, work, bureaucracy, but also rest, everyday rituals, talks -in Quechua—there’s not only a realistic willingness, but also a political one on the importance the language is given in the film.
Lacking any stereotype and picturesqueness, Kinra invites us to accompany a journey that is not as much, or is not only, a geographical displacement, as it is a return to the origins and a powerful recognition of identity.
