Synopsis
After more than two decades abroad, Alejandra returns to Cusco to settle her family's affairs, only to discover that the father she believed dead is alive — imprisoned for his ties to the terrorist group Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path). Determined to understand the man who abandoned her as a child, she travels into the Andes to confront him, unraveling a family history bound to Peru's most painful decades.
Refusing to reduce its characters to victims or perpetrators, the film asks what reconciliation can mean for a generation still living in the shadow of political violence.
Directed by Joel Calero, The Most Feared Skin is the second installment in Calero's Trilogy of Memory, a planned political-film trilogy focused on the years of internal conflict and political violence that shook Peru between 1980 and 2000. The other two titles in the trilogy are One Last Afternoon and Family Album.
Reviews
“A cinematic story with which many Peruvians, Colombians, or anyone who has faced a similar experience of armed conflict will be able to identify.” — Sofía Gómez, El Tiempo
“Joel Calero's new film explores violence in Peru, the struggles of Peruvian immigrants to adjust, and the absence of a father figure.” — Inés García-Belaunde Bedoya, Perú21
“The great virtue of The Most Feared Skin is that it places its story in an Andean context, where the wounds left by the past internal war can be felt through the encounter between a daughter and her until-then unknown father.” — Juan José Beteta, Cinencuentro
“Calero manages to tell a solid, well-structured story that shows realities of Peru that some still resist narrating, and others resist accepting.” — Milton Calopiña, Cinencuentro
“Calero is a filmmaker who connects, dialogues with the audience, invites different sensibilities, and represents violence from an angle that ultimately creates bridges toward reflection.” — Zoraida Rengifo, Nuestro Sur
