Earth Community, Ep. 01 - Mexico, Huehuecoyotl

Paulina Ferretti, Juan Tamayo | Documentary, Series

2023 | 29 minutes | Chile

In the 1960s, a group of itinerant artists founded Huehuecoyotl, an ecovillage in Mexico and Latin America looking for an alternative way to live.

Synopsis

The community of Huehuecóyotl (""The Old Coyote"") was established in 1982 in the mountains of the Sierra del Tepozteco. It is considered a pioneering ecovillage in Mexico and Latin America. Its history is tied to a nomadic group composed of individuals from various disciplines and nationalities who, after 17 years of traveling, decided to settle down and create a lifestyle modeled on ecology, the arts, and alternative living systems.

In Huehuecóyotl, housing is developed using eco-construction techniques. As a group of environmental activists, its members have been forerunners throughout Latin America in areas such as permaculture, bioregionalism, group decision-making facilitation, sociocracy, and educational workshops. The ecovillage serves as a hub for education and learning, benefiting both its residents and countless visitors. This episode tells the story of some of its founding members.
