(Mesoamérica)
Jota Loyola Crovetto | Documentary

2021 | 53 minutes | Chile, Colombia

Mayan and Zapotec communities revive ancient prophecies and sacred mushroom rites to welcome a new solar cycle long kept secret.

Synopsis

Central America is one of the most significant regions for Indigenous medicine in the world. It was home to highly developed cultures such as the Maya and the Zapotec, whose traditions were buried after the Spanish Conquest. A Mayan spiritual guide, and his community perform the Waqxakib’ B’atz’ ceremony, fulfilling an ancient prophecy.

In Mexico, an apprentice shaman travels to the mountains of Oaxaca to meet elderly Zapotec teachers who harvest Los Niños Santos mushrooms every year. Under their effects, on the coast, Zapotecs and Mayans welcome the new sun during the winter solstice.

Series Description

Twelve Indigenous communities across the Americas open the doors to medicinal rituals they have kept secret for centuries. They share sacred knowledge that, unlike the modern pharmaceutical industry, does not seek to cure disease but to preserve health.
This series offers a provocative perspective on nature, medicine, trance, and our understanding of well-being.
