Dicing with Death, Ep. 05 - Cuba: Viva la Vida

(Cuba: Viva la vida)
Daniel Lainé | Documentary, Series

2019 | 52 minutes | France

In Cuba, no matter the obstacles, people keep smiling and moving forward.

Synopsis

While most of Cuba's roads are in good condition, the countryside tells a different story. Few cars are in running order due to the country's isolation from the world, resulting from a nearly 60-year-long US-imposed economic embargo. New cars are rare, and replacement parts are almost impossible to find.

Cubans have become masters of improvisation, keeping their mostly 1950s vehicles running. These cars are a mechanical mix-and-match, with parts sourced from various makes and models, often from different countries. The ingenuity of these vehicles, which may even use generators as engines, would give European car testers a surprise. Despite their limitations in speed, they manage to get the job done.

In rural areas, like on the banks of the river Toa, people like Luis have to rely on bamboo rafts because there are no roads to their farms. Navigating the rushing currents becomes a thrilling and daring adventure, offering a glimpse into an authentic and uncharted Cuba far from the usual tourist paths.
