Neighborhood Cinemas

(Cines de video)
Wari O. Gálvez Rivas | Documentary

2020 | 101 minutes | Peru

Elder Peruvian cinema workers screen a movie in which they are the protagonists, sharing intimate tales from their past in old theaters.

Synopsis

In a touching documentary, a group of seasoned cinema workers from across Peru prepares to screen a film where they are the central characters. These former operators, ticket holders, and administrators share their most personal and unforgettable experiences, reflecting on the old cinemas where they spent much of their lives, growing older with the theaters they cherished. Through their evocations and memories, the film generates a profound sense of longing for a bygone era in Peruvian cinema.

This ambitious documentary documents not only the roles and struggles of these workers but also the rise and fall of the theaters themselves—from the first brick laid to their eventual demolition. As these old movie houses face their final years, the workers too find themselves aging, often forced to learn new trades as their theaters close.
