Daniela Seggiaro | Documentary
2024 | 80 minutes | Argentina
In 1991, Miguel Ángel Lorenzo filmed Wichí life, capturing forest journeys, events, and legal evidence, highlighting culture and land rights.
Synopsis
In 1991, the young Wichí man Miguel Ángel Lorenzo picked up a Hi8 video camera and, with humor and sensitivity, began documenting life in his community. Together with his neighbors, he filmed journeys through the forest, visits to nearby homes, school events, archaeological explorations, and even the arrival of a judge — all part of the evidence for a legal case the Wichí had been pursuing since 1986.
Directed by Daniela Seggiaro, Our Demand is constructed from these images, episodes, and everyday moments, revealing how Indigenous protagonists communicate to the white world the significance of the forest, their language, and communal life — essential pillars of their ongoing struggle for territory and recognition.
Reviews
“Daniela Seggiaro's documentary uses archival footage to portray the struggle and daily life of the Wichi community in General Mosconi, Salta. Through home videos, the feature film reconstructs the collective memory and reveals how resistance, language, and connection to nature shape the identity of a people in the face of decades of political and economic pressure.” – Marvel Aguilera, Revista Ruda
“During this process of defending communal property, we gain insight into the communication efforts made by indigenous communities to help the contemporary world understand their social functioning, which differs from that of the West and is deeply linked to the preservation of natural resources.” – GPS Audiovisual
“Our Demand is much more than what lies on the surface. In its final third, Seggiaro’s documentary takes on a more openly political tone as it shows the on-site inspections by the judge and those involved in the trial. There, mistreatment and disdain intertwine with the relentless attempts of some to tip the scales, and the steadfast resilience of those who fight for what they believe is rightfully theirs.” – Ezequiel Boetti, Otros Cines
“More than a retrospective exercise, Our Demand stands as a bridge between past and present. By connecting archival footage with the territory, Seggiaro turns these films into a space for dialogue that reaches both indigenous communities and urban audiences.” – Juan Pablo Russo, Escribiendo Cine
