Barajas
(Barajas)
Javier Izquierdo | Documentary
2021 | 63 minutes | Ecuador
Latin America's turbulent history told through archives of the deaths of authors Angel Rama, Marta Traba, Manuel Scorza, and Jorge Ibargüengoitia.
Synopsis
Barajas explores the haphazardous death of Angel Rama, Marta Traba, Manuel Scorza, and Jorge Ibargüengoitia in a plane crash near Madrid's airport of Barajas in 1983. Through the archival footage of these four authors - each from a different Latin American country and resident of Paris - the filmmaker evokes the continent’s visual memory during the second half of the 20th century, full social and ideological struggle, dictatorships, and exiles that influenced a whole generation.
Reviews
“The project reflects Ecuadorian filmmaker Javier Izquierdo's fascination with forgotten cultural figures.” – Soraya Constante, El País
"The air tragedy of 1983 took Ángel Rama, Marta Traba, Manuel Scorza, and Jorge Ibarguengoitía. A new research recovers their voices." – Juan Pablo Correa, El País (Uruguay)
