Fernanda and Bernarda
(Fernanda y Bernarda)
Rocío Martín | Documentary
2023 | 83 minutes | Spain
A poetic portrait of flamenco icons Fernanda and Bernarda, tracing their journey from Utrera to the world through artistry, memory, and silence.
Synopsis
Fernanda and Bernarda tells the story of two extraordinary singers—women, Gypsies, and artists. The film traces the lives and work of the cantaoras from Utrera through a series of scenes that reveal as much as they leave unsaid, offering insight into their singular artistry and humanity while engaging with the mystery that flamenco embodies in these two figures. Bernarda is portrayed as pure, unrestrained genius. As for Fernanda, Camarón once observed, “If she brought us all into one room, she would out-sing every cantaor alive today.”
The film moves from Utrera to Madrid, a journey shaped by a profound family rupture. It then travels to New York for the 1964 World’s Fair, follows the rise of flamenco festivals, and arrives in early 1980s Paris with the release of a legendary recording.
