Rebelled
(Rebeladas)
Andrea Gautier, Tabatta Salinas | Documentary
2023 | 82 minutes | Mexico, Spain
In Mexico, the pioneering Colectivo Cine Mujer used feminist cinema to challenge patriarchy, bridging past and present through activism and film.
Synopsis
March 8, 2022. The world rises up to speak out against macho violence. In Mexico, a remarkable group of women comes together to tell their story: in the late 1970s, they founded the Colectivo Cine Mujer, producing films for a decade with a bold stance of political activism.
They forged a feminist cinema grounded not only in theory but also in intuition—many making their debut as filmmakers while simultaneously discovering the power and awareness of their own womanhood.
Shaped by the revolutionary spirit of 1968 and the surge of second-wave feminism, these pioneers confronted issues that, nearly fifty years later, remain painfully relevant.
Through their films, they invite us to reflect on the challenges women still face today, creating a dialogue across generations. Their work bridges the past and the present, revealing the courage, creativity, and resilience of women who dared to make their voices—and their vision—heard.
Reviews
"Rebeladas addresses how for more than a decade, the Colectivo Cine Mujer used this art form as a political tool to denounce gender issues that defined Mexican society at the time. Today, almost five decades after its formation, the documentary turns to the group's protagonists to tell their story and contrast the reality they portrayed in their films with the panorama faced by Mexican women today." – Gustavo R. Gallardo, Morelia International Film Festival
